Student found dead in submerged car after Prince George wreck

// News // DC // VA // Richmond

PRINCE GEORGE -- A high school student was found dead inside a vehicle this morning after it went off a Prince George County road, down a ravine and ended up partially submerged in water.

Prince George Fire & EMS Director Brad Owens said the crash was reported at 7:46 a.m. at Courthouse and Bull Hill roads, a short distance northeast of Interstate 295's U.S. 460 interchange.

Police officers who arrived on scene within minutes of the crash were unable to get the vehicle open, and the vehicle was eventually pulled out of the water by a tow truck, Owens said. At that point, crews got the lone occupant out of the vehicle, he said.

The occupant was unresponsive, and resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful, Owens said.

The identity of the occupant was not immediately available, but the county later posted on its Twitter account that the victim was a high school student. Authorities did not identify the student or the school.

A police dive team from Petersburg was called to the scene to search the marshy area for anyone else who may have been involved in the crash, Owens said.
