Spc. David Buller, formerly of Atkinson and a member of the U.S. Army 181st Firefighters based in Norfolk, recently presented Beth Tielke of O’Neill with a commemorative U.S. flag.
Tielke is the founder of the Nebraska Troop Support effort.
The flag was given in appreciation for the care packages the organization and its volunteers have sent to troops deployed throughout the world since 2006.
Ruby Dobias, Buller's grandmother, was also on hand for the ceremony. Dobias is instrumental in designing and sewing the Quilts of Love that are distributed to the troops.
She also makes the “Jeans Pockets,” which are recycled denim pockets, stuffed with goodies.
The flag was hung in the fire station at Forward Operating Base Deh Dedi II Afghanistan, where the 181st Firefighters from Norfolk were stationed during their tour of duty.
The flag and certificate of appreciation will be on display at Pinnacle Bank in downtown O'Neill.
