Major Gift Shortage in 'Be a Santa to a Senior' Program in Lynchburg

// News // DC // VA // Lynchburg

Lynchburg, VA - Hundreds of seniors may not get a visit from Santa this year. The "Be a Santa to a Senior" program is reporting a major shortage so far this season.

In Lynchburg alone, more than 1,000 seniors signed up, and still more than 400 currently do not have gifts under the tree.

The items they're asking for are very basic: Toothpaste, shaving cream, and slippers.

Organizers say the shortage hasn't come from lack of interest. They say people have taken a senior, but not many people have brought back any items.

Organizers say in order for these gifts to be delivered, they need to be turned in no later than Monday, December 10.

"These people typically are isolated, can't get out and usually don't have visitors. So having a volunteer on their doorstep bringing them a Christmas gift and can stay and visit, that's awesome. It's the best part about the program," said Brenda Dixon, director of client care at Home Instead Senior Care.

The situation in Roanoke is very similar.

So if you are participating in the "Be a Santa to a Senior," organizers are asking you turn those gifts in as soon as possible to the site where you took the information. It could be the only gift some of these seniors get this Christmas.
