Danville, VA-- It was a big night for one man in Danville. Harry Kolendrianos received the 80th annual Danville Kiwanis Citizenship Award at the Institute for Advanced Learning.
The Danville Kiwanis Club recognizes outstanding citizens every year that contribute significantly to the region.
Kolendrianos has been an educator for 43 years, and has been heavily involved in the community. United Way, the American Red Cross and the YWCA are just a few examples. He said he was shocked when he found out he won the award.
"It's quite an honor to be selected as citizen of the year," Kolendrianos said. "Having been a member of this club for 40 something years and then doing what I did in the community I never expected anything like this. I didn't work toward anything like this."
Kolendrianos also got another surprise on Thursday night. His family came from out of town to see him get the award.
