Graves damaged by toppled tree at Hampton cemetery

// News // DC // VA // Hampton Roads

HAMPTON-- One very big tree is causing some disturbing problems at a Hampton cemetery.

A huge oak tree fell during the summer at Oakland Cemetery on Pembroke Avenue, breaking apart a crypt and exposing part of a skull.

Marquita Latta has family buried in the cemetery.  She and several Sons of Confederate Veterans volunteers spend time keeping the cemetery neat. They discovered the opened grave.

"We want to know whose family that could possibly be," said Latta.

If they are able to find the family members, the volunteers want to give them the option of getting a new vault.

"I would want to know if that was my loved one's grave," added Latta.

The volunteers say they've cleaned up as much of the debris as possible. They're hoping someone with heavy machinery will offer to help.

If you would like to volunteer to help in the clean-up, call 723-8901.
