Hampton manager: Lax oversight in cigarette sting

// News // DC // VA // Hampton Roads

HAMPTON (AP) -- Hampton's city manager says an investigation into the city's police department has revealed there was lax financial oversight of an undercover cigarette sting.

City Manager Mary Bunting released a statement Thursday saying there was no documentation for how $8,000 in travel and investigative funds were spent. Bunting also says unspent travel and investigative funds were not collected.

Police Chief Charles R. Jordan resigned earlier this month after accusations arose that money from the investigation had been misspent. Jordan had said his resignation shouldn't be interpreted as an acknowledgement of wrongdoing, but that the city's support of the department has declined for several years.

Bunting's statement says the typical records required to be kept in undercover operations by the police department's policy were not kept in the cigarette sting operation.
