Rodeo To Ride Into the Valley

// News // DC // VA

Augusta Co. Rodeo

The Wild, Wild West is coming to the Valley. The Augusta County zoning board has given the okay for a farm owner to open her doors to cowboys and cowgirls.

The 59 acres at Old Grey Mare's farm in the Raphine area of Augusta County is about to get an upgrade. Mare Scott is taking the project by the reigns.

" Oh my gosh, it's so exciting." said Scott.

Scott put in for a special use permit to use the farm for bull rides and other rodeo shows. The zoning board said yes.

Scott says, "the western's on the rise."

It's a lifelong dream come true for this cowgirl.

"Bull riding, rodeos, team roping and barrel racing. It's just too much fun." said Scott.

Scott is talking with one of her trainers about the work that needs to be done. She's deciding on seating, lights and the grounds.

"This area's needed an indoor arena like this. There's lots of people that ride." said Scott

Scott hopes that her business will give a boost to other businesses. People at the nearby Greenville Grocery and Deli are talking about the rodeo.

"I think it's a good idea." said John Ackelson who lives in nearby Greenville. He says he knows many people would be up for the rodeo.

"Things like that, that's fun 'cause we don't have much to do around here. I'd like to try it." said Ackelson.

Now Mare Scott can bring the Wild, Wild West to the Valley.

"We're the wild, wild people to do it." said Scott with a laugh.

She's planning to have her first event in January.
