One byproduct of Penn State’s recent four-year bowl ban is four more years in State College for football coach Bill O’Brien.

O’Brien’s contract now extends to 2020, per an agreement that covers NCAA sanctions, according to a document obtained by the Centre Daily Times of State College, Pa. The “addendum,” as O’Brien called it Wednesday, was part of the pact he signed when he was hired in January and adds four years to his five-year contract.

Penn State was sanctioned by the NCAA on Monday for athletic department officials’ part in a cover-up of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky’s sexual child abuse. Included in the sanctions were the postseason ban; a loss of scholarships over a four-year period; vacated wins from 1998 through 2011, and a $60 million fine.

The addendum, which was published by the Centre Daily Times, reads: "Any sanction by the NCAA of a) loss of scholarships or b) bowl eligibility due to the actions of the previous staff or lack of institutional control prior to 2012 will immediately result in an automatic extension of coach's contract at 2016 total compensation and bonus package in years equal to the number of years of the sanctions.”

O’Brien will be paid about $2.3 million per year in the five-year deal; that includes a base salary of $950,000 year and annual 5 percent increases. He also will receive $1 million annually from radio and TV revenue and will take in $350,000 from Penn State’s contract with Nike, according to the Centre Daily Times.

O’Brien came to Penn State to succeed former coach Joe Paterno, who was implicated in the university’s cover-up in the Freeh Report. Before joining the Nittany Lions, O’Brien spent five seasons as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. Prior to that, he was a college assistant for 14 years.
