BALTIMORE (WJZ)– A Northeast Baltimore community continues to mourn the loss of five family members killed after their home went up in flames on Wednesday night. Four of the victims were children, and two them attended a nearby elementary school.

Rochelle Ritchie speaks with the principal.

WJZ has learned that two of the firefighters injured while fighting this fire are out of the hospital. Another is still being treated for severe burns to the face and neck. All the while, this neighborhood is still grieving.

As a little girl lays down a teddy in memory of her friend Tykia Manley, she breaks down in tears.

Seven-year-old Manley lived at the home on Denwood Street along with several other children. The home went up in flames Wednesday night, killing the little girl, three other kids and their grandmother.

“I have seen the kids ride up and down my street and I have given them juice and popsicles. That’s not going to happen anymore,” neighbor Vickie Banks said.

Manley and four-year-old Darryl Stewart attended Moravia Park Elementary School. On Friday, a sign honoring their lives hangs in the hallway, signed by students and heartbroken teachers.

“It’s very difficult,” Debra Brooks, principal of Moravia Park Elementary, said.

Brooks says Manley was in the second grade and Stewart was in his first year of school. Hearing of their deaths sent shock waves through everyone.

“Tykia was very lively. She had lots of friends here. They were both really good students,” Brooks said. “Darryl was becoming to come into himself as a student.”

It was just before 2 a.m. when the home went up in flames.

Neighbors say the glow of the blaze lit up a dark sky and black smoke filled the air.

“We pretty much knew at that point they were gone,” neighbor Brandon Jones said.

Fire officials say the fire started in the basement of the home, the flames then traveling all the up until they shot out of the roof. All five victims were found in the back bedroom.

One of them was two-year-old K’nyah Scott.

Brooks says a crisis management team is now available for students and teachers. The school now using this tragedy as a lesson for others.

“We will have persons from fire department to meet with our students to talk about safety,” Brooks said.

And one of the lessons will be the importance of having working smoke detectors. This home had three but non of them were working.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The grandfather who jumped to safety remains in the hospital.
