Fon George G. Meade was established in 1917 and used chiefly as a training center during World Wars II. Fort Meade houses Headquarters, the National Security Agency. Also Army Field Band; HQ, NE Region Recruiting Command; 694th Intelligence Group (Air Force).

Public Schools: Students attend 4 elementary schools (K-6), I middle school (6-8), I high school (9-12) schools operated by the Anne Arundel County School System. Arrangements can be made for children wishing to attend off-post private schools.

Colleges: Evening classes held on base by Anne Arundel Community College, George Washington University, University of Md., Central Michigan University, Bowie State College, and others.

Recreational Facilities: The post has softball, football and soccer fields, a field house with basketball, voUeyball, handball and badminton courts and 15 outdoor tennis courts, 3 swimming pools and 2 18-hole golf courses. A Rod and Gun Club and a Flying Club are very active.

Sports arena with indoor swimming pool, track and field, The post also offers shops for arts and crafts for local artisans, automobile, and photography. Facilities on base may be used by active and retired military, their families and guests, and civilians employed on base. Ft. Meade Museum, established in 1953, exhibits military artifacts and is open to public.

Medical Facilities: Kimbrough Army Community Hospital (112 beds). Extensive health services provided area military retirees and base workers and families.
