Intra city and suburban bus transit operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), run by a board of representatives from DC and suburban governments. Metro riders take about 500,000 rail trips a day. WMATA is constructing the 101-mile rapid transit system estimated to cost more than $9 billion and opening in stages through 1993. 81.63 miles are completed.

Bus service frequent and reasonably priced for routes on major roads, with differing fares for service in and out of DC The minimum fare for both bus and Metro is $1.10. Fast Passes $50 (rail only) 2 weeks. Flash Passes for 2 weeks cost $20 to $34 and are good for bus transportation. Metro: (202) 637-7000. Also Greyhound andArntrak, Conrail, Chessie System tail links Maryland suburbs to Union Station, Dulles International Airport, and National Airport, in outlying and adjacent Virginia.
