I used to hear the same thing at work when Washington's birthday took place - why are were celebrating a man that owned slaves. But you know, my family didn't immigrate here until the early 1900's - we weren't responsible for that. So don't lay the guilt on me.

However, I know there were slaves at the time. But they forget, white women didn't have that many rights ethier at that time. While there was no forced labor or beatings (in most cases) - marriage made them the property of their husbands - they could not vote or own property. Yes it took almost another 100 years for the slaves to be free - but what is important - what should be celebrated -it was that beginning.
