District of Columbia
(D.C.), a federal territory established in 1790 as
the site of the new nation's permanent capital. Named
after the first U.S. president, George Washington, the
city has served since 1800 as the seat of federal government.
Wherever the American citizen may be a stranger, he

If you come from abroad, you may really feel it is your
city, as the capital of the free world. The White House
is now better known around the globe than many palaces
in Europe.

Like a vision in fantasy, the large white dome of the
US Capitol rises above the trees at the end of converging
avenues in Washington. The Washington area offers a
variety of both natural and manmade environments. It
is an area rich in history and vast scenic beauty. Washingtonians
have the best of many worlds. It is sophisticated, modern,
and an international capitol surrounded by an incredible
countryside. The District of today is a city of power,
prestige and elegance with diverse communities that
reflect the cultural and social diversity of the population.
Washington, D.C. has been the nation's capital since
1800 and home to every U.S. President since John Adams.
The capital city is built to human scale. There are
no skyscrapers because federal law prohibits the construction
of any building taller than the Capitol. There are broad
avenues, plenty of parks, monuments, and memorials.
Washington is also an international capital and is
host to over 130 embassies from around the world. The
presence of foreign governments attracts many international
agencies. Washington is a city of ethnicity, keeping
alive the traditions of diverse people who call this
city a home.

Founded
in 1965, Blues Alley is the nation's oldest continuing
jazz supper club,having showcased internationally renowned
concert hall artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan,
Nancy Wilson, Grover Washington Jr., Ramsey Lewis, Charlie
Byrd and Maynard Ferguson, in a small intimate setting.
The
famous trees, a gift from Japan in 1912, signal the coming
of Spring with an explosion of life and color surrounding
the Jefferson Memorial on the Tidal Basin in a sea of
pink and white. Exactly when the buds will open is not
an easy question to answer, but the National Park Service
Regional Horticulturalist Robert DeFeo has been fairly
accurate in his forecasts over the past several years.

John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is America's
National Cultural Center. Located in Washington, DC, the
Kennedy Center presents the latest musical and theatrical
productions, jazz concerts, family performances, and a
free performance every day at 6pm on the Millennium Stage
The
National Mall, a park envisioned during the 18th century,
remained undeveloped until the McMillan Plan of 1902 urged
a return to the original design of French architect Pierre
L'Enfant. During the 20th century the area of the Mall
was cleaned up, establishing a boulevard that stretches
from the Capitol building to the Washington Monument,
seen here in the distance.
